As you age, visible changes begin to occur on the skin. You may start noticing lines, wrinkles, and blemishes that make you appear older than your actual age. At Khrom Dermatology & Aesthetics, we understand the desire for a more youthful appearance; therefore, we include cosmetic laser services such as IPL photofacial treatment in our portfolio. Photofacials are a common cosmetic procedure that can erase years of sun damage and aging to transform and revitalize your appearance.

Explaining IPL photofacials
An IPL photofacial is a cosmetic skin rejuvenation treatment that uses intense pulsed light to target a number of common skin conditions. It triggers rapid cellular turnover, helping the body eliminate damaged cells, excess pigment, broken capillaries, and red spots, improving your overall skin tone and leaving you with a beautifully healthy, glowing complexion. A photofacial uses thermal energy light waves, which means that in addition to targeting the skin blemishes, it also boosts the skin’s natural production of elastin and collagen to restore volume and improve texture.
IPL photofacials are highly customizable. During photofacial treatment, the settings can be adjusted according to your specific skin type and color, along with the condition being treated. The IPL photofacial then uses this specifically calibrated light to penetrate pigmentation build-up below the epidermis. On the surface, the treated area will flake as part of the body’s ongoing exfoliation and regeneration process.
At the same time, the thermal energy of an IPL photofacial stimulates the elastin and collagen fibers located in the deep layers of skin, causing natural skin rejuvenation. As a result, IPL photofacials are effective at treating sun damage as well as fine lines and other signs of aging.

Candidates for photofacials
We may recommend IPL treatment for a patient who is experiencing skin discoloration as a result of sun damage or other skin conditions, or someone interested in improving the tone and texture of their skin. This is a broad-spectrum treatment, capable of targeting both excess pigmentation and vascular tissue. Therefore, it is an excellent option for treating red spots (vascular lesions), diffuse redness, and brown spots (hyperpigmentation).
Candidates should be in good physical health and not currently using any facial medications. IPL photofacials are not suitable on women who are pregnant. All individuals undergoing an IPL photofacial or any other cosmetic procedure should have realistic expectations about the results from treatment.
It’s important to discuss any medications that you are taking prior to treatment so that we can ensure there will be no adverse side effects from treatment.
The photofacial procedure
Prior to treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to the skin and left for period of 20 minutes to allow it to be fully absorbed by the skin. The intense pulsed light is then directed at the desired treatment areas. Most patients describe experiencing a warm sensation during treatment. The entire treatment is usually completed in under an hour.
Following treatment, there may be redness or mild swelling for the first day or two. Within about a week, you will see significant improvement in discoloration and skin texture. Dark areas such as freckles will dry out before flaking off naturally.
While most patients see a difference after the initial treatment, many will need several sessions of photofacial treatments to see maximum results. During your consultation, we’ll determine how many treatments are necessary to achieve your desired results.
At Khrom Dermatology & Aesthetics, we want all our patients to look and feel their best.
