Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in Brooklyn, NY and around the world. Although usually associated with teens, acne can affect anyone at any age. The symptoms and best treatment options vary, depending on the type of acne and your other skin needs. At Khrom Dermatology, we begin with comprehensive analysis and devise a personalized treatment, designed to help you enjoy clear and healthy skin.

What causes acne

Sebaceous glands are located just below the surface of the skin. They serve an essential function, excreting oil (sebum), which protects and lubricates skin. However, when not functioning properly, these glands are also the source of many skin problems. When they become clogged, they create an ideal environment for colonization of the bacteria p. acnes. The resulting inflammation of the gland causes a bump, which is commonly called a pimple.

Although acne vulgaris, described above, is most common, there are other forms of acne. In some cases, sebum glands clog, but they do not become infected with p. acnes bacteria, a condition known as comedonal acne. Red, pus-filled bumps are called cystic acne. Many patients experience more than one type of acne.

Acne treatment options

Some people with mild acne find relief with over the counter medications, but it can be extremely challenging to find an effective product. Additionally, the wrong product choice can aggravate the condition. There are also many prescription oral and topical medications, which can be very effective as part of a treatment plan devised by a dermatologist. However, these products also have limitations, and many patients are sensitive to the side effects.

At Khrom Dermatology, we offer advanced treatment options, which provide relief to patients who cannot tolerate traditional medications or find them ineffective. These include:

  • Blue light photodynamic therapy (PDT), which harnesses the power of light to kill the p. acne bacteria, effectively clearing skin.
  • Chemical peeling with salicylic acid to dissolve sebum and unclog pores
  • Personalized clinical care by our skilled aestheticians
