Photo Dynamic Therapy Brooklyn, NY

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), available from Khrom Dermatology in Brooklyn, NY is one of the most advanced and gentle light-based treatments. It is especially beneficial for patients with acne and may be used to treat other conditions as well.

What to expect

Photodynamic therapy combines light treatment with Levulan Kerastick, a photosensitizing medication. After the treatment area has been cleansed and prepared, Levulan is applied topically. It takes about an hour for the formula to soak in and penetrate sebaceous glands. You should not experience any discomfort during this time.

Once the Levulan has soaked in, it is photo-activated by applying laser or other light energy. This only takes about ten minutes. You may experience some burning or stinging sensations, but it is well tolerated by most patients.

There is no post-treatment pain, and facial redness fades within a couple of days. You can resume most daily activities, but you will need to completely avoid direct sunlight for at least 24 hours following photodynamic therapy. Most patients will need two or three treatments, about three weeks apart, for optimal results.

Acne treatment

Although photodynamic therapy can be used for other conditions, even skin cancer in some circumstances, acne treatment is where it truly excels. The most common type of acne is caused by bacteria colonizing deep within clogged skin oil glands. Oral antibiotics can be helpful, but they are not recommended for long-term use, and topical products often don’t reach the bacteria. Photodynamic therapy features deep-penetrating medication, which actually kills the problematic bacteria when activated by light. This procedure may be used alone, or as an adjunct to other acne treatments.

The benefits of photodynamic therapy

This procedure is remarkably effective, due to the powerful therapeutic effects of Levulan. The advantages of photodynamic therapy include:

  • Targets and kills p. acnes bacteria, quickly ending acne breakouts and clearing skin
  • Can also be used to target cancer cells for treating certain types of skin cancer
  • Fast and comfortable procedure, with no scarring and minimal downtime
  • The laser energy stimulates collagen development, improving overall health of skin
