Discuss treatments for warts and skin tags with a dermatologist in Brooklyn, NY

Patients in the Brooklyn, NY area who are seeking general, cosmetic, and medical dermatology solutions are welcome to book a consultation with Dr. Tatiana Khrom and her team at Khrom Dermatology and Aesthetics. Her practice is here to offer treatments for a variety of concerns, including warts and skin tags.

What are warts?

Warts are lesions that grow on the skin due to a virus. This lump or bump is typically benign, but hard and small. They are caused by HPV, or human papillomavirus. Warts are contagious, so many patients choose to have them removed as soon as they are spotted. While there are over-the-counter ways to eliminate warts, many of them take too much time and may not work as effectively as treatment available with a dermatologist.

What are skin tags?

Another growth that may develop on the skin is skin tags. These are more commonly known in the medical field as acrochordons. They are typically formed with a stalk, and depending on where they are located, may become irritated or may have a negative aesthetic impact. The cause of skin tag development is unknown, but there are patients who may be predisposed to developing them depending on their family history. Removal is often suggested if they become irritating due to location, or if they are causing an aesthetic problem.

Removal of skin tags and warts

There are many ways in which Dr. Tatiana Khrom may remove benign lesions such as warts and skin tags. In most cases, patients want them removed for cosmetic purposes. The techniques available include the following:

  • Shaving – shaving of a skin tag can be done to reduce the size and help it become less noticeable.
  • Cutting – in some instances, skin tags can be cut out with a scissor snip.
  • Laser treatment – laser therapies can be used to address a wide range of issues with the skin, including skin tags and warts.
  • Electrocautery – heat to essentially “burn” the skin growth off can be achieved by our dermatologists.
  • Cryosurgery – freezing off the wart or skin tag is a popular option that can be done right in our office.

Which is right for me?

In most cases, the doctor will choose the most effective way to remove the wart or skin tag based on the size and location of the lesion, as well as the budget and expectations of the patient. We encourage patients to speak with our team during a consultation appointment and ask questions about the treatments so they can make a knowledgeable decision.

How do I know if a skin tag is a serious concern?

There are many types of skin growths and lesions that can impact a person. Many patients have their skin evaluated regularly to ensure that they don’t have skin cancer, which can sometimes start as an unusual growth. Dr. Tatiana Khrom encourages patients to come to her office at least once a year for a skin cancer screening, during which patients are evaluated from head to toe to look for indications of skin cancer to take a biopsy and test the skin cells. Patients who have any unusual growths that are new or changing should visit our dermatologist to have these growths evaluated to catch problems early enough for effective intervention.
